They finally included USB3, which is very good because there are more USB3 external HDDs around than there are Thunderbolt and FW800. I don't know if the screen matrix is IPS or TN. Hope it's IPS.

ext2fuse from macports works great on snow leopard. I mounted an external ext3 drive and it seems to just work. Integration is command line only, unfortunately, since seamless integration with finder could make it more widely useful. But for emergencies it is the only way I found to read linux filesystems on a mac.

In the meantime I discovered problems caused by conflicts of two different fuse projects for mac, where one is a dependency for truecrypt and the other for extfuse, so I had to uninstall ext2fuse and install fuse-ext2 ro resolve a conflict. And I'm not too happy about the behavior of the thing, I had multiple errors and strange behavior in rw mode.

Unity and gnome 3 are incredibly poorly designed and implemented crapware and it all should be abandoned and user interface returned exactly to the point where it was in Jaunty, which was perfect and should not have been tampered with. I understand new releases to keep the packages fresh but this is a serious usability degradation, meaning the system running unity or gnome3 is useless for serious work. Me, I'm switching to Mac, I lost confidence in linux desktop.

Give us back the Classical Ubuntu Gnome Desktop!

I tried to integrate Cinnamon into Precise and I actually got it working but it was not stable and I didn't like it all that much. Then I tried Mate, which got into serious conflicts with Gnome - ended up not being able to control password storage etc.
Then I tried Linux mint 13 which I couldn't get to properly upgrade my Ubuntu installation due to all kinds of stuff in my home dir. Everything seemed to work from a live CD but after install it had hardware problems, like mouse not working, wifi card not working etc.
Then I downgraded everything to Lucid in order to at least have a stable enough system for a transition to Mac. And yes, USB on my motherboard works on 1.1 speeds in all versions prior to Precise - they fixed that, but Precise is otherwise unusable. It's a bloody nightmare. I'm writing this on my mac laptop and I'll buy a desktop mac as soon as possible just to get a stable system without windows and without linux. I had it. I only upgraded to Precise because of dependencies for Gimp 2.8 and it proved to be a very costly mistake.

So it really is as good as it looks on paper.
